US HISTORY

I think that most Americans believe that the Civil War was about slavery alone was because of the emancipation proclamation. In truth, the emancipation proclamation was just sort of a way to raise morale and give the north a reason for fighting. The real reason for the Civil War was that the South believed that the individual state's governments should hold more power than the federal government. It was over this disagreement that the Civil War started. The reason the South first raised arms is because they did not agree with the North's views on government. The South wished to have the state's governments in control as opposed to having the federal government having complete control. Many people believe that the Civil War was about slavery because that's what the North tried to make it about. The North tried to make it about slavery because that would raise the amount of people who were willing to fight. The South had a justified reason to fight. The South wanted to break away from the North and become their own territories. They had a goal in mind (to have the states governments superior to the federal government) and because they were fighting for a cause, they had more people willing to fight. The North only fought so that they could control the South. The emancipation proclamation only came up as a way to boost people's morale and change their attitudes about the war. Lincoln passed it in 1863 and it let the North occupy the slave states. It also let the slaves fight for the North which added to their military force. The emancipation really did nothing but help out the North's army.As you can see, the Civil War was not about slavery. It was about the South wanting independence. Many Americans see the war as a war of slavery because of the emancipation proclamation but it is not so.

  1. Ryan, i absolutely agree with some of your stances. Some stances you take, however, i view as biased. I am not trying to "bash" you in any way, shape, or form; I'm just letting you know. I agree that Americans are ignorant as per the reason and history of the Civil War. Not only because of what we've heard in class, but also because of hard facts. After Ms. Garber told us in class, I read the Emancipation Proclimation: (http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/featured_documents/emancipation_proclamation/transcript.html). Nowhere in the Proclamation does the gist of freeing slaves even occur.
I disagree, however with the comment you made about the North wanting to control the South. I believe the North(majority) wanted the South to evolutionize as the North did, as far as industrialism.

  2. Yo dude you wrote a good blog on this question. I found that your blog had a lot of pertinent information that showed exactly how the war wasnt about slavery, but about freedom and independence of the white man. So as I give you your praise, I shall give you some criticism. Your essay needs order....BAD! I find that your thoughts are just scattered all around all over the place. Kinda like trying to paint a picasso with a paintball gun rather than a brush. Other than that, your good to go.

    Semper Fidelis.

  4. Your essay had a lot of information regarding the slave situation. I did get kind of confused at some parts but i got the over all idea. I do agree that they only made the war about slaves just to get people involved, which is wrong of course. Even though your essay was a little out of sorts you did do a good job on the topic and showed opinion. Can't wait to read your next blog.

  5. I liked your essay. I think you're right on some views, and a little wishy-washy on others. Like Erik said, your essay does need more order but i think it was pretty strong. Good job.

  6. Your blog/essay was very informative but not well organized. But at the end you had got ur point across pretty well. Basically stating what most people teach about the civil war is what people want to hear instead of the truths.
